A warm thank you to everyone who made our National Book Awards on Campus at Sam Houston State University such a HUGE success!

On March 23 and 24, NBF’s National Book Awards on Campus program returned to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. 

We want to extend a warm thank you to everyone in Huntsville who graciously welcomed our National Book Award Winners and Finalists: the students and faculty of Sam Houston State University… Dr. Amanda Nowlin- O’Banion, visiting professor of creative writing…. Dr. Scott Kaukonen, director of SHSU’s MFA program for creative writing… the students and faculty of Huntsville High School… and the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County.

A special thanks also to our National Book Award on Campus participants: National Book Award Winner Phil Klay…. National Book Award Finalist Fred Moten… National Book Award Finalist John Corey Whaley… and Jeff Shotts, executive editor of Graywolf Press.

National Book Awards on Campus brings our Winners and Finalists to college and university communities across the country. This March 26 and 27, our honored authors will be appearing at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for what will be the tenth anniversary NBA on Campus at Concordia

This year’s guest authors are Evan Osnos, Winner of the 2014 National Book Award for Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, and Anand Gopal, 2014 National Book Award Finalist for No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War through Afghan Eyes.

The authors will be joined by NPR correspondent John Ydstie, Concordia class of ‘74, and NBF executive director Harold Augenbraum.

MARCH 26:

8:00am CT: Anand Gopal breakfasts with Concordia College Faculty Book Club

8:00am CT: Harold Augenbraum breakfasts with Concordia College librarians.

10:30am CT: John Ydtsie meets with Concordia College New Media class

Noon CT: Academic Excellence lunch with Concordia College first-year students, faculty, and National Book Award authors.

1-2pm CT: Gopal, Osnos, Augenbraum, and Ydstie meet with Sjgma Tau Delta

2:15-3:15pm CT: Gopal, Osnos, Augenbraum, and Ydstie meet with Offutt School of Business students.

5:30pm CT: Dinner with Concordia College President William J. Craft

7:30pm CT: Readings and Conversations with National Book Award Authors, hosted by NPR correspondent John Ydstie ‘74 in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center. This event is free and open the public.


March 27:

9:20-10:20am CT: Gopal and Osnos conduct master classes with Concordia College students.

9:20am-10:20am CT: Ydstie meets with Concordia College Journalism and Global Studies students

Noon, CT: Faculty lunch: Arts and Humanities in the Era of Economics: A Conversation with NBF executive director Harold Augenbrauma and NPR correspondent John Ydstie moderated by Concordia College President William J. Craft.

MARCH 23:

6:30pm-8pm: Readings by all three 2014 NBA visiting authors, as well as on-stage interviews moderated by Jeff Shotts, executive editor of Graywolf Press, at Gaertner Performing Arts Center, Payne Concert Hall. Book signings will take place after the moderated discussion.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

MARCH 24:

National Book Award YPL Finalist John Corey Whaley and NBF Assistant Director Leslie Shipman visit Huntsville High School for reading and Q&A. Whaley and Shipman will also visit BookUp students at the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County in Huntsville, TX. 

National Book Award Fiction Winner Phil Klay takes part in “craft talk” on fiction writing with SHSU’s creative writing MFA students. 

National Book Award Poetry Finalist Fred Moten takes part in “craft talk” on poetry with SHSU’s creative writing MFA students.
