Poet James Tate (pictured left), who won the National Book Award in 1994 for Worshipful Company of Fletchers, has passed away at the age of 71.

In her appreciation of Tate’s Award-winning poetry collection on our website, the poet Evie Schockley writes: “He is a remarkably effective reader of his own poetry, which cannot be said of every poet, and his oft-noted ‘deadpan delivery’ and sense of comedic timing tend to focus listeners on the humor in the seemingly wild juxtapositions that appear within his lines.”
