Riverhead Books announced the winner of its Little Free Library sweepstakes today. A 15-year-old Boy Scout from Harlingen, TX struggle to find an Eagle Scout project with meaning until he learned about Little Free Library [LFL], an Innovations in Reading Prize-winner.
“What a great concept and way to give back to my community. If you look at the LFL world map there is only one library in our entire region. You can certainly see a void for hundreds of miles in every direction. My dad always tells me to try and leave a legacy and that’s what I hope to do with this project. My goal isn’t to just build one LFL but to start a movement in the Valley with LFLs in our region.”

Today, the children of NYC’s Hamilton-Madison House sang in appreciation of their newly restored library. The library was destroyed by Hurrican Sandy, but re-opened today thanks to Books for Kids a 2014 Innovations in Reading Prize winner.
A National Book Award Winner tops the list of the ten most challenged books in 2014 according to the American Library Association.

5 Under 35 honorees are promising young debut fiction writers whose work is poised to leave a lasting impression on the literary landscape. This year’s honorees are Colin Barrett, Angela Flournoy, Megan Kruse, Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi, and Tracy O'Neill
Join us on November 19 at 3 p.m. for a 5 Under 35 panel moderated by Benjamin Samuel and again at 6:30 p.m. for a reading of the honorees’ work.
Both events are free and open to the public.

Everybody’s cracking jokes about how it’s a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the age of Amazon.
But you know what? Props to them. This is exactly what Blockbuster didn’t do. At no point was Blockbuster like “Hey, movie rentals aren’t the lucrative enterprise they once were. Perhaps it’s time we become known for our cheesy garlic bread.”
that’s a fantastic plan, honestly? i would 100% go sit at a bookshop, buy a glass of wine, and pick up the newest biography. 50/50 i’d decide to buy it after a couple chapters, and even if i don’t, that’s still money i spent at B&N!
They could host book clubs with food and drinks where one of the employees shares their experiences with a book of their choice and tries to convince the guests to buy it.
Barnes and noble realizing the only reason people go to brick and mortar stores is for the experience and access to an enjoyable physical space they can socialize in (sure isnt for the price) and capitalizing on that is a stroke of genius and a really refreshing approach to the dilemma of competing with online stores
