Riverhead Books announced the winner of its Little Free Library sweepstakes today. A 15-year-old Boy Scout from Harlingen, TX struggle to find an Eagle Scout project with meaning until he learned about Little Free Library [LFL], an Innovations in Reading Prize-winner.
“What a great concept and way to give back to my community. If you look at the LFL world map there is only one library in our entire region. You can certainly see a void for hundreds of miles in every direction. My dad always tells me to try and leave a legacy and that’s what I hope to do with this project. My goal isn’t to just build one LFL but to start a movement in the Valley with LFLs in our region.”
The prize was judged by Riverhead authors and voted on by the public. Read more of his winning entry here.
The National Book Foundation is looking for individuals and institutions that are using innovative means of creating and sustaining a lifelong love of reading, like previous winner Little Free Library (picture above).

During their recent Kickstarter campaign, Innovations in Reading Prize Winner Little Free Library was delighted to receive a library designed by the artists of The Simpsons. It’s signed by Matt Groening, as well as “Bart” and “Lisa.”

Today, the children of NYC’s Hamilton-Madison House sang in appreciation of their newly restored library. The library was destroyed by Hurrican Sandy, but re-opened today thanks to Books for Kids a 2014 Innovations in Reading Prize winner.
Little Free Library, one of our 2013 Innovations in Reading Prize Winners, is building a Little Library honoring past National Book Award Authors. It’s almost ready for our National Book Awards Ceremony November 20!

But you know what? Props to them. This is exactly what Blockbuster didn’t do. At no point was Blockbuster like “Hey, movie rentals aren’t the lucrative enterprise they once were. Perhaps it’s time we become known for our cheesy garlic bread.”
that’s a fantastic plan, honestly? i would 100% go sit at a bookshop, buy a glass of wine, and pick up the newest biography. 50/50 i’d decide to buy it after a couple chapters, and even if i don’t, that’s still money i spent at B&N!
They could host book clubs with food and drinks where one of the employees shares their experiences with a book of their choice and tries to convince the guests to buy it.
Barnes and noble realizing the only reason people go to brick and mortar stores is for the experience and access to an enjoyable physical space they can socialize in (sure isnt for the price) and capitalizing on that is a stroke of genius and a really refreshing approach to the dilemma of competing with online stores
