NBF’s BOOKUP VISITS “THE ABC OF IT” AT NYPL
Photos from BookUp’s first field trip of the school year. Students and faculty traveled to the main branch of The New York Public Library for a tour of The ABC of It: Why Children’s Books Matter. A dynamic, multi-media exhibition, the books and objects on view captivated the group.
BookUp is a National Book Foundation after-school program in NY and Texas that encourages kids to read for pleasure with the goal of turning them into life-long readers.

In 1928, F. Scott Fitzgerald was invited to dine with his hero James Joyce. Fitzgerald’s illustration (pictured) depicts a moment when he dropped to one knee next to Joyce (who is shown wearing a halo) and said, “I am so excited at seeing you, Sir, that I could weep.”

“Becoming The Man in the White Suit: The Tom Wolfe Papers,” an exhibition of the pioneer of New Journalism’s papers and letters is now open for public viewing at the New York Public Library. Among the literary gems on display: research notes and a letter from Senator John Glenn, one of the original Project Mercury astronauts profiled in Wolfe’s 1980 National Book Award Winning book The Right Stuff.
In 2010, Wolfe, who was also a Fiction Finalist in 1998 for A Man in Full, received the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters and shortly thereafter donated his papers and letters to the New York Public Library.
This week, we were thrilled to announce the Longlists for the 2019 National Book Awards. These titles in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature represent some of the best writing of the year. The Finalists will be announced October 8, all in the lead up to the 70th National Book Awards on November 20.

Everybody’s cracking jokes about how it’s a desperate attempt to stay relevant in the age of Amazon.
But you know what? Props to them. This is exactly what Blockbuster didn’t do. At no point was Blockbuster like “Hey, movie rentals aren’t the lucrative enterprise they once were. Perhaps it’s time we become known for our cheesy garlic bread.”
that’s a fantastic plan, honestly? i would 100% go sit at a bookshop, buy a glass of wine, and pick up the newest biography. 50/50 i’d decide to buy it after a couple chapters, and even if i don’t, that’s still money i spent at B&N!
They could host book clubs with food and drinks where one of the employees shares their experiences with a book of their choice and tries to convince the guests to buy it.
Barnes and noble realizing the only reason people go to brick and mortar stores is for the experience and access to an enjoyable physical space they can socialize in (sure isnt for the price) and capitalizing on that is a stroke of genius and a really refreshing approach to the dilemma of competing with online stores
