Gloria Emerson was one of a few female journalists who covered the Vietnam War. Her 1978 National Book Award Winning book Winners & Losers was her passionate account of the effects of America’s prolonged and ultimately failed engagement on Americans, veterans, and the Vietnamese people.

Her conclusion that pollution-related toxins contributed to countless deaths and illnesses became the basis of When Smoke Ran Like Water, a 2002 Finalist for the National Book Award.

The 1994 National Book Award Finalist book revealed the machinations involved in silencing Anita Hill, whose allegations of sexual harrassment nearly torpeoded Thomas’s nomination, and brought to light damning new evidence of Thomas’s culpability.

In The Gnostic Gospels, early Christian scholar Elaine Pagels introduced the public to fifty-two ancient texts discovered in Egypt in 1945 that suggested an alternative history of the formation of the early Church as presented in the gospels of the New Testament— a history that was more sensitive to women and viewed as heretical by the early Church leaders.
The controversial findings of The Gnostic Gospels, which won the National Book Award in 1980, later inspired the best-selling Dan Brown novel The Da Vinci Code.

Maxine Hong Kingston won the 1981 National Book Award for Nonfiction for China Men. Weaving together memory, myth, and fact, Kingston vividly portrays the lives of Chinese men and women in America from the 1840s to the Vietnam war and draws into sharp relief the lack of acceptance that prevented these migrants from ever gaining recognition as Americans.

A few weeks after 9/11, Megan K. Stack, a twenty-five-year-old national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, was thrust into Afghanistan and Pakistan, dodging gunmen and prodding warlords for information. From there, she traveled to war-ravaged Iraq and Lebanon and other countries scarred by violence, including Israel, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen.


Her account of what she saw in these combat zones and beyond became the basis of Every Man in this Village is a a Liar: An Education in War, a National Book Award Nonfiction Finalist book in 2010.

The book earned a National Book Award in 2012 and playwright David Hare’s adaption of The Beautiful Forevers is now on stage at London’s National Theatre.

These titles in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature represent some of the best writing of the year. The Finalists will be announced October 8, all in the lead up to the 70th National Book Awards on November 20.
