Remembering Gore Vidal (1925-2012)



Gore Vidal won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1993 for United States: Essays 1952-1992 (read his acceptance speech here), and was a Finalist two other times: in 1970 for Reflections Upon a Sinking Ship (Arts and Letters), and in 1974 for Burr (Fiction). In 2009, Joanne Woodward presented the Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters to Vidal at the National Book Awards.
